I was in the library for two periods today, as I needed to get my 10 & 11 classes set up with multicultural & classic novels respectively. They're always trying to wiggle their way into something completely irrelevant. Case in point: during the multicultural book selection...
Kid: "Can I do Lord of the Rings?"
Me: "No."
"But there are lots of cultures..."
"No."
"There's elves & dwarves..."
"No."
"My brother did it last semester..."
"Look," I said, feeling the beginnings of pique, "how many times do you want to hear me say no? 20? Because I just want to get it out of the way. You're not doing the book."
"Shut-down," the kid beside him muttered.
It was kind of fun. I cannot believe the difference between one semester and the other; I feel like I finally got the good kids, and my confidence sticks out a mile. I am happy.
