Weird Things People['s Books] Tell You When You're Pregnant
part 5

When I told Nic that I was going vegetarian this year, it was the first thing he approved of in years. "Omigod!" he said, "can I lend you a book?" That book was called Diet for a New America (a.k.a. DfaNA). I, of course, never looked at it.

Flash forward to yesterday. The Boy's mother (who I will hereafter refer to as BoyMama), the Boy & I are all sitting around, discussing the nutritional value of mushrooms. As I only have one book even close to a reference text, I pull out DfaNA. I didn't find out anything about mushrooms, but I did find out that accumulated stores of pesticides & artificial hormones in the mother's body poison breast milk even as it is produced. "So high is most mother's milk in DDT, PCB's, dieldrin, heptachlor, dioxin, and so on that it would be subject to confiscation and destruction by the FDA were it to be sold across state lines." The conclusion of the book, unsurprisingly, is that everybody should eat a vegan diet from birth to protect babies yet unborn. No word on what to do if you used to enjoy Whoppers.

I'm giving this one back to Nic, I think. It's both weird and upsetting.
