"This paper deals with the gender ideas inherent in the Canadian state's control of sexuality in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This period is distinctive in Canadian history, as it represents a new country coming to terms with the unique pressures of nation building. Through the definition of the heterosexual family norm, the state attempted to further its goals of creating a large, well-behaved population that knew his or her place in the scheme of things. Canada attempted this through a series of measures designed to criminalize "aberrant" sexuality. Through an examination of these criminal measures in the context of the period, I hope to shed light on the intent of the lawmakers in creating a uniquely Canadian society with definite gender ideals."
