They say that literacy made its greatest gains when it was the only escape from a confining and narrow existence on the family farm. I'd like to extend the idea, and say that church attendance is highest where there is no cable. Hell, that's how we ended up regular parishioners. And not just parishioners: active parishioners. After this morning's service, I wandered over to talk to a woman from the committee we're on, only to be waylaid by a representative from the choir who saw me singing the doxology to myself. I can't help singing when I'm not supposed to. I'm just a brat. But because I was sitting two rows from the front, I was caught & branded as "a voice." When they found out that I could read music, a gleam appeared in their eyes and I knew that I wasn't getting out alive.

So I joined the church choir. Consider it one more step down the slippery path of responsibility, blue robes & all.
