Well, I sure wish I was doing something exciting that I could write about and wow all my many readers.
But... well... I'm not.
So instead, I'm going to write about the music I've been listening to recently.
I just got ADSL, as some of you may know, though I haven't managed to make it wireless quite yet. But in the meantime, I started downloading music. And, on my first try out, I went mad. I think I downloaded more songs than I have in my CD collection.
No, no. That's crazy talk.
But I did download a lot of music.
My current favourite of all the songs I've downloaded is "Stand Up" by Ludacris. I can't stop listening to it. It's the absolute shit.
I also downloaded a lot of Sean Paul, mainly to confirm something David had told me about Sean Paul's lyrics and his obsession with backdoor sex (Sean Paul, not David). Anyway, it was no Ludacris.
I'm a big Queens of the Stone Age fan, but didn't know much about Kyuss, which I have been told time and again leaves a big gap in my musical library. So I downloaded some Kyuss, which turned out to be pretty damn cool. Again, no Ludacris, but hey, they're in a completely different genre. So, it's ok.
Another friend recently recommended some music, so I figured what the hell and downloaded it. And, well, he turned out to be completely wrong. This friend doesn't read this blog, but in case he does on the sly, the Shins suck. On a scale of 0 to Ludacris, they don't even rate. His other recommendation, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, fared somewhat better. If I could kick my Ludacris habit, I would totally listen to them more.
Moving on to music that I've actually shelled out good money for, I recently started, in true Gosia style, to become obsessed with soundtracks. I picked up Fight Club, and City of God. Fight Club, I knew from before, and it's fun to listen to. I wouldn't put it on at a party, nor would I turn off the Ludacris for it, but it does make for good listening in the right mood. Moody, darkly humorous, and with decent beats, it's perfect when you feel like smoking pot and talking bullshit about how consumerism is ruining society or how art is dead or something equally useless.
City of God, on the other hand is an entirely different kettle of fish. I've never seen the movie (yes, yes, I'm sure it's brilliant and I'll get around to it someday, but in the meantime, I have to listen to some Ludacris, so get off my back), but as far as I understand it, it's set in a slum in 1970s Brazil. The music is supposed to evoke that mood, and it does pretty well. It's a mix of 70s rock done Brazilian style, and some samba, and etc. Very cool.
The other CD that I picked up recently is Luke Slater. I know sweet fuck all about this guy, and I have almost no interest in learning more, because that time spent on the internet doing research could be better spent (listening to Ludacris, you guessed it). But this CD, Wireless, kicks ass. The packaging features what appears to be stills from a movie which involves spies, sharp suits, and guys getting beat up. Pretty groovy, I guess. But... the CD rocks. It randomly caroms between big beat and electro and ends on a fairly atmospheric note. I like to listen to this on my bike, though the fact that it changes gears so often is a bit of a downer in this situation, as I tend to prefer something that gets me going while I'm riding, and every so often Wireless goes schizophrenically slow and sleepy on me. Still, pretty sweet.
For another non-reader, I send a birthday greeting... Happy Belated Birthday, Shotgun Milos.
