So I'm sitting around listening to Joy Division and the song "Dead Souls" comes on.
I had a high school flashback while it was on. Some people listen to Joy Division and remember truly moving moments in their lives. They think back to a moment when the world was crumbling around their ears and the only thing keeping them going was playing Joy Division over and over, or some particular memory of a perfect afternoon spent in someone's dark basement, making out and listening to music and smoking the kind of cigarettes you wouldn't even look at anymore, much less smoke.
It seems I am not so sentimental. This is the memory that popped up for me:
Andrew, a friend of mine from high school, who was the tall, skinny, pale, troubled epitome of teen goth cool, is telling me about how much he loves the soundtrack to the Crow. I mention that "Dead Souls," which Nine Inch Nails covers for that soundtrack is one of my favourite songs. Andrew says, 'It's pretty cool. The NIN version is way better than the original, though."
At the time, in the interest of being cool, I smiled, nodded, and agreed wholeheartedly. In retrospect, this was a completely pointless exercise, as Andrew was not even vaguely cool, and there was nothing to be gained by this. What I should have said was, "That's a ridiculous statement, Andrew, as NIN have changed almost nothing in this limp remake. The only reason you choose that one over the original is because you think Trent Reznor is the coolest person to walk the earth. Which kind of makes you a sad little bunny."
Oh, for lost opportunities. They keep calling me... posted by Alleen at 9:08:52 PM

While I was away, I received my latest ebay purchase... the Joy Division box set.
The guy I bought it from sent me a bunch of freebies along with it, some additional songs that he burned onto CD for me.
This guy, who shall remain nameless, is my new best friend. My roommates are out and I've cranked the Joy Division up. I may not be a goth, but I have my moments.

Just when you think life is complicated, you get a complete surprise thrown at you.
Well, that's what happens to me all the time anyway. I guess I really shouldn't speak for you. posted by Alleen at 12:19:07 AM

I spent much of last night, when I should have been sleeping, reading this.
Damn funny. Followed the link from Belle de Jour, which is also worth checking out. Hey, it's a featured blog at blogger, so it must be good, right?
Well for once, it is. posted by Alleen at 10:06:01 AM

Is it just my sleep-deprived state, or is this really weird?
Despite the fact that I look like crap, all my clothes are mushed, and I probably smell like death, I'm so high on sleep deprivation that I don't care.
Also, I'm back in Nederland. I notice the rain gods are sending me an appropriate offering of welcome. Thanks a bunch, rain gods. posted by Alleen at 11:37:20 AM
