Apparently there are a lot more lactose intolerant people in Finland than in the Netherlands. I just had some first-class no milk ice cream and I think I'm in love. And on top of that, you can't get this stuff anywhere else. And every restaurant I go to has labels on their food as to whether they have lactose or not. How cool is that?

I'm moving here. Just for the ice cream.

My hostel has just become a lot more crowded due to the fact that the world hockey championships are in the stadium next door. For those of you who are fans of hockey, I am surrounded by young, poor, and cute hockey players. Neat.

Helsinki, day 2. I'm in the university library in Helsinki, a neo-classical, frou-frou yellow wedding cake of a building. Yesterday, I packed in as much as possible into one short Helsinki day. The highlight was a visit to the Kiasma, the Finnish museum of contemporary art. It was so much fun that I went through it twice. Yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd, whatever. This is my visit to Helsinki... when you come, you can pick what you want to do. I also went to the rock church, which is a church built directly into the granite bedrock of the city, and the Sibelius monument, and the Uspensky cathedral, and Senate square and all sort of other fun stuff, which I'll expand on in a future entry. Surprisingly, I also made it to H&M and found the red jacket that I'd despaired of finding elsewhere.

Today, I'm heading to the local UNESCO site... a fortress on an island called Suomenlinna.

Finland in Finnish is known as Suomi. No one, not even their closest neighbours call them this. I can't really figure out why.

One thing I've learned today is that if you want people to comment on your website, you should get pregnant.

Hey... I've heard worse reasons.

You go, Aleta ;-)

Must dash. Have Finns to meet.

Okee dokee. I'm in Finland, newly checked in to a hostel at the Olympic site. I'm staying in a huge-ass room which was apparently formerly athlete's accomodation. For some reason, this is making me feel fat.

Anyway, it's a gorgeous day and I know almost nothing about Helsinki, so I should probably take a walk. Plus this computer is way fucked up and seems to be typing this in Finnish. Internet in Finnish is Netissa with an umlaut over the a.

I dropped off mom at the airport a couple of hours ago and have been enjoying the spring sunshine in Amsterdam since. I stopped to check my e-mail a little while ago and then decided on a whim to check out what was on the KLM click and go website.

So I'm going to Helsinki tomorrow.

I was hoping Lisbon, but this came up and I figured I'd improvise.

Maybe Lisbon in May.

Anyway, all sorts of fun updates coming later when I'm not sitting in a shit web cafe with a mouse that barely works and sunshine outside calling to me.

Later skaters.
